Well think I found the problem:
QUOTE
Too high a stall range torque converter will not benefit the customer. You will see this situation most often when the customer does not have sufficient gear ratio for the converter stall range or the engine is not capable of the appropriate rpm range (too small a duration camshaft, inadequate valve springs, too low compression, etc.) Symptoms include high "revs" to pull away from stop, "marshmallow" accelerator feel when driving at part throttle, transmission and possibly engine overheating, and a pronounced engine rev when nailing the throttle from a cruising speed.

Article courtesy of TCI

Right before this fiasco I had changed from a tiny 9"x2" open element filter to the factory enclosed 12"x3.5" with ducting to the front to effectively make a cold air intake. Timing was was also advanced a fair amount, along with new plugs and wires, and dialing in the carb. So with the engine running like a dog it wasn't making anywhere near its full potential. So the 2.41 gears must be to blame, and the converter? The converter looks stock, as its bronze coloured but I read where increasing the engine torque to a stock converter would effectively raise its stall speed. So maybe it's ok. I really don't know but that description from TCI fits my problem to a "T".

Tundra... biggrin.gif frown.gif

it should have been a turbo diesel, and manual. But now I can tow my projects once again, I am 12 weeks out of surgery, and maybe I can tinker with tools once more.

Now you have to get a lift kit and mud tires for it to fit in with everyone else in the South. laugh.gif

Nice! Tundras are great! My dad has loved both of his. His v6 towed a ton of crap and never skipped a beat. We've never towed much with his v8 one yet.

As if things couldn't get any better turns out the transmission in the Firebird is trashed after all. "Thankfully" I was only stranded two miles away from the house when it decided to let go and I was able to limp it back home. I give up.

Yep, Drive is completely gone now. I was doing about 40 when it happened, engine just started free-revving so I bumped into second thinking it was an issue with third. Goes into second with no improvement, just higher revs. Stop and check fluid it's full but burnt. Only two miles from the house and the trans is trashed anyway so I just limped it in first to make it home, I wasn't about to throw more money down the drain on a two mile tow trip... Reverse still works perfectly fine though, so at least that'll make loading it up onto someone's trailer easier...

I guess I'm glad it happened before I went through the trouble and expense of doing a rear swap and trans cooler install...

Sell it and I'm not sure if I'm going to buy another car or not. Since the one car I remotely want at this point is 1/3800 minus how ever many have been destroyed. Might just take a break from cars, it'd be nice to not stress over some pile of metal for once.

Get the trans rebuilt, grow a mullet, drive it forever, marry your cousin.

Replaced the drivers side engine mount today, wow what a difference. Smooth idling and no torque steer.

No, no, that one I'm not entirely adverted to, and Hell no.

I'm probably just going to call the older gentleman that's hounded me to death since I've bought the damn thing, the second or third time he actually drove into the driveway and was saying how he had a shop and would go through everything anyway.

Found out apparently as the titleholder I don't have to jump through hoops and get bonded and licensed to get a rebuilt title for the Miata. Just have to repair the damage, get it inspected, and if it passes pay $90 for the rebuilt tag to be riveted into the driver door jamb and for a renewed copy of the title. I can save everything but the fender to look nice enough to pass inspection, so why the Hell not. That and I'll need a turn signal housing since it was obliterated, but that aside... Had someone wanting to buy it yesterday or today and haven't heard from them, I found the information while trying to give them the right answer but wasn't going to back out since I already had agreed to sell it to him.
