ok so i'm tearing down my 92 3sgte and i get stuck at the pulley, no biggie i'll continue and come back to it later, well... this is later. all has been removed, and now that pulley needs to come off. the big (like 19mm or more) bolt or nut simply won't budge! tried putting the screws/screw drivers in the 2 holes and turning it with a breaker bar but it simply bent the screws. moved on to a decently nice, fairly new impact wrench, and have the same result. need some help guys/gals. thanks. i've been told there's a better tool, can anyone be specific? thanks.

Well uh, most of the time my impact takes it off no problem, if it won't work for you, then one thing you can do is (after removing the transmission and flywheel), thread in two of the flywheel bolts, opposite each other, and put a prybar between them, hold that with one hand while you work the breaker bar with the other, that way the crank doesn't spin. Or you may be able to wedge the prybar on something so you can use both hands on the breaker bar.

I'm assuming of course that the engine is out of the car.

I have had that same problem before too, and if the engine is still in the car, here is a way, put the breaker bar on the bolt and then either brace it against the frame or the floor and then with the ignition coils unplugged from the harness so the engine will not start, just bump the starter over and the starter will break the bolt loose.

Worked on my daughter's car and I had a huge impact on it and it would not even think about coming off.

Did that on my sister's car as a last resort... after all of the "proper" methods failed.

take off the oil pan, wedge a wooden handle of a hammer between the crank and block, then use a breaker bar to remove the pully.

thanks for the advice doc, you will surely end up doing some wiring for me at some point. ha

and well some new information as of recent as well...
went to autozone, they told me just to break the bolt sealant loose required an impact wrench w/ a ridiculously high PSI (and the compressor to match). now luckily i know a guy who would probably take 2minutes w/the impact wrench at the nissan dealership he works at to give it a quick go. (any legitimate mechanic [no offense to anyone not in this situation who considers themself 'pro'] should have a compressor capable of 1,000+ psi) again, so the guy at autozone says...
and yes the engine is infact out of the car.

1000psi huh? LOL

100 is more like it. The difference is in the quality of the impact gun itself.

The starter bump is a great method that I've used many times, but of course it only works when the engine is in the car kindasad.gif
