Picking up an oil filter tonight for an oil change monday, need to order my trans fluid as well. Getting 4 quarts of Redline D4 since it's the synthetic fluid most closely matched to the specs of T-IV in terms of viscosity at different temps and what not. A lot of other multi-spec fluids are thinner when cold, hot, or both.
As for mounting the trans cooler, everyone does those nylon spears through the fins and I'm sure those would be fine but I just don't like them. I'm thinking I can rig some kind of of aluminum brackets attached to the front crash bar and the lower core support. Or something. -------------------- |

I'm fairly certain Casey could build a car from a kit like a Caterham 7. In fact that would likely be the ideal car to satisfy both of you because you can get some crazy engine/trans combos in those things AND they're fairly competent when it comes to handling.

Pretty sure it's all gross.
I think I have a solid plan to mount the trans cooler off the lower core support lip and the crash bar using L shaped aluminum stock and some rivetry and bolts/nuts. Maybe. I'm going to need to make some bends but I need them to be rigid so things don't wobble about so my idea was cut a wedge out of the aluminum L bar stock to let me make the bend then use a bit of aluminum flat stock and some aluminum rivets to put a brace across the now angled section to make it more turgid and stiff. I'll mount the cooler dead center to clear it away from the horn and power steering cooler loop and use threaded barbs to attach to the cooler and short sections of rubber hose to attach the cooler barbs to some hard line of some kind, likely copper or aluminum for ease of bending that'll run around to the stock trans cooler and transmission. It'll all make sense when it's done, maybe. First road block, where the hell do I buy a coil of aluminum tube in 10mm or 3/8ths? I could do copper I guess...kind of had my mind set on aluminum because I thought it would be cheaper. I want to run the bulk of the lines as hard line and use rubber hose only to do connections between parts to minimize the chances of a burst hose in the future. I plan to make some hose stays from cuts of rubber tube and clamp them in intervals along the copper lines to bind them together and stop them from rattling. I'll have to find some tie points or make some tie points for brackets to hold the lines in place along their route so things don't rattle or rub through. NO LEAKS! I guess given COVID I should use copper, it's biocidal after all! This post has been edited by Bitter: Aug 22, 2020 - 9:25 AM -------------------- |

Why not coated steel? 25' of 3/8" is like $20 on Amazon. That or spend a bit more for nylon or nickel-copper if you want it to be easier to work with. Maybe rubber hydraulic hose?

Steel will be hard to bend tightly without kinking, aluminum or copper is softer but work hardens to hold shape after being bent. Cu/Ni line is a great idea but Amazon's search not sucking is a better idea!
https://www.amazon.com/Team-Performance-Dia.../dp/B07KWXY3QT/ I WAS LITERALLY SEARCHING 3/8TH ALUMINUM TUBING and that did not come up. Came up as a related item on a page for Cu/Ni 3/8th line. I can put a little bubble flare at the end of the line easily to lock the rubber hose onto it and use some good fuel hose clamps that won't cut the line to secure it nicely in the engine bay, use oetiker clamps outside since they're stainless steel. Might just be able to get some NPT to compression fittings and run straight hardline to the cooler. I'll have to verify what threading is in this hayden cooler later and start ordering parts. I'll get the aluminum locally, rivets/riveter online. YUP, 3 pack stainless 1/2 npt to 3/8th double ferrule compression fittings $15 amazon. So the fittings I need do exist which is a nice change of pace because usually none of the weird parts I want to use are actually a thing. This may actually be easier, I've only been staring at this cooler for 8 years! This post has been edited by Bitter: Aug 22, 2020 - 3:28 PM -------------------- |

Ha yeah I get a little shy about modding the car since I expect the worst or expect things to work out worse than they do.

Woot! Good Luck! They really liked the car, but were also going to look at a NB2 Miata before deciding. SEE! I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE TO CROSS SHOP THEM!!! Though he seemed uncertain on the Miata, and said would message back after seeing it. If it works out he'll be back Friday to get it.
