NEWEST PROGRESS- Always my posts that say "NEW NEW NEW"

Ok so I bought the supra lights 2 weeks ago, and ordered the supra rear bumper last week, and its coming from manhattan (only a 3 hour drive from me) so I should have it very soon.
Im going to take a ton of pics, and sort of step by step it, since no one really has. Essentially doing the same thing 0re0 did, with some of my own twists.

Also as I suspect the bumper is going to take alot longer than it should, because people never just ship things out. Always wait a week mad.gif Im going to try some other things in the mean time.
Thats why i need some pics of the gt4 grill modded into a non gt4 bumper, like my invader. I know the pics are out there, ive seen them before, but after a half hour of looking and not finding I figured maybe someone would remember the member name? hopefully.
Also making some fender vents, not sure of the style just yet, but it just seems pretty easy. If anyone has pics of some custom fender vents Id love to see them. Maybe get some new ideas.
Thanks for any help, and ill post as soon as I get the bumper in

YES! thank you playr! i knew someone did it i just couldnt remember who.
Im thinking about just cutting out and making the grill, but just using some metal mesh, as I already have it. And Im getting really good with fiberglass work.
The bumper is supposed to be here tuesday-friday. why is there such a big gap? Idk lol
But Ill post up pics as soon as I get it.

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW

So i actually got the bumper today (bought it 4 days ago!). Also came with the side pieces, which the seller specifically told me it didnt, and they were for sale for an additional $80! So i got those for free smile.gif

Started to do a little bit of work with it, but ive been up since 3am so I didnt feel like doing much, about an hour in so far.

Anyway got it, and measured everything to get it centered. Contemplated it for a while, and got it bolted on to start.
Unfortunately a friend borrowed my good grinder, so i was stuck trying to do it with the crappy one that barely had anything left. So i got tired of it after most of the first one.

So heres some pictures. Ill try to make a huge post when its basically done, with time progression pics, and explanations. But for now, Im not even all that sure what im doing laugh.gif But its getting there. All starting to make sense in my head smile.gif

Took the old bumper off

Put what I had left of rustproof rubberized undercoating on, just for safe measures since it will never be back off lol

Just got it

Beginning grinding. I made it too small. But on purpose, better than grinding off too much.

First test fit. I got it alot closer just a few mins ago, Ill get better pics tomorrow

Like i said alot more grinding to do. More on the inside really, outside is almost done on this side. Im just being cautious with the grinding. Trying to get it near perfect, and not taking too much out.

Little closer, although it doesnt look like much tongue.gif

Just a Pic of both on

Ill hopefully get that side done tomorrow, if the rain holds off. Then Ill start the other side. Im going to save the sides for last, although I have a pretty good idea how its going to work

Also huge thanks to deathdoakill, gave me some great info smile.gif

Im not sure yet, thinking I should just do the supra, considering the sides and rear will be. But honestly yours looks 1000x's better lol. Its still up for discussion, if you have something to suggest. Im up to it if I like it smile.gif
But Im short on money now with the 3s all paid, new car, bought all the new paint, fixing my chevelle, and now this project laugh.gif . Gonna finish this up first

I don't know why, but I always thought the Supra rears looked like a fat kid trying to blow a square bubble. This will deffinately be unique though. I look forward to the finished product.

Will you be at the DWG meet this year?

EDIT: Yeah, DWG, sorry haha.

not to be an a$$ haha, but the right one looks a little crooked still. You need to raise the right side of it up a little it seems. Make sure you use a leveler!
Can't wait to see it finished man!

Wow thanks alot everyone, I cant believe this actually got alot of support on this lol. Unlike when I did the sides and people freaked on me and hated the very idea tongue.gif
I do kinda like your idea sound, with the 350z smile.gif And seeing how I dont plan on having the 3s done for another year, Im deff doing the front as well. Quite possibly doing one of your ideas biggrin.gif

Oh and I know the lights are off. The bumper is actually slanted and bit, not really sure why, maybe it looks right on the supra? But ill fix that tomorrow, when I really get it cut out right.

But anyway as sound pointed out i havent even begun the process. I just only had an hour out there. An hour of me not knowing what im doing too lol tongue.gif I still got to grind out a ton on both sides, hopefully i get my good grinder back, and can find my safety gogles. early I was just nearly closing my eyes and praying wink.gif haha
I think ill be able to finish the passenger side cutting tomorrow, and start the drivers. But its also a 40% chance of rain tomorrow, so we'll see
Again a huge thanks to deathdoakill for the inspiration on the project. Wish me luck smile.gif

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW
Thanks smile.gif everyone. Sorry not a whole lot of progress
I finally got out there today just to be rained out after only a half hour mad.gif . But I did get some work done, grinded out the hatch and everything that needed to be grinded out behind it light all done, pretty much perfectly. May try and smooth it out a bit more before adding the fiberglass to everything I cut.
Anyway Im not sure if its the bumper, or if it works on the supra? But from the inside corner of the bumper (where the light goes) to the outside, it slopes down about an inch. Anyway Im not sure how the other supra rear guys did it, but I plan on making them sit even and filling the huge gap (you'll see in the pics what I mean)
I have a ton of stuff to do in the next few days but hopefully I can get out there and do the other side. This side has only taken me about 2 hours, so the next side I should be able to do in under and hour. Just need the time to get out there

You can see how much it drops by the time it gets to the orange light.

And this is the gap I need to fill. Its pretty much a perfect fit now. Just may not look like it cause its held up by a glove lol. Ill fill all this in before I start the other side, and by the time its dry the other side should be done as well

I am completely through the back of the hatch for most of the light. I was trying to leave a bit there if it was possible, but I may have to cut the whole back out so the light can sit back far enough. Its still only in the beginning stages tongue.gif
but Yeah pics would be great, anything to help me out lol. I helped my friend finish up his valve job tonight so i may get to my projects tomorrow smile.gif

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW
Ok so ive been sick frown.gif yeah in the middle of summer mad.gif lol and i finally got out there today, but only for a little bit and then it started to rain (i need a garage tongue.gif) and i didnt want to be out there after i got sick in the rain

But I got alot done. Although it doesnt look like it, alot of fine tuning and tiny things that were off that take 10x's more time than the beginning. and actually bolting the light in, and making a makeshift mount lol. And making the hatch actually close (didnt close before)
Im not sure if anyone will notice, but i cut too much off the top. But i did it on purpose so I can fiberglass it smooth. Still a ton of work to do, but hopefully it doesnt rain tomorrow, cause I have nothing to do finally and I can spend all day on it.

Coming together slowly

Fill in the gap tomorrow and get rid of the glove lol

So i didnt get much time to work on the rear today, but I did start the foam process. Keep in mind this is the first time ive ever used this stuff, and I tried to do it too small/use to little, just cause I dont really know how its going to expand and dry and everything.
Ill get some more pics tomorrow of how much it expanded and what the next step is

Start- taped it off to keep it all clean

taped a general shape, and started filling

added more

Obviously im going to sand it down, and then add fiberglass. But its getting the shape

trying to keep it to a minimum cause i dont know what im doing tongue.gif. but ill add more if it needs to be tomorrow.

Closed up and waiting for it to dry smile.gif

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW

Firstly thanks everyone for the positive support smile.gif
Its been like 90°+ and its going to be like that the next couple days, so im not going to get anything done. But I got some work done today from 4-6am and its already 87° out there frown.gif needless to say im not going back out there lol
The foam that I did worked really good, and I found that cutting it with a hacksaw actually worked really well, and since its pretty long you can cut the general shape very easy. Hard to explain, just getting the info out there.
Then I also added the sides on. Took some time to figure it all out, and how to approach it, but i got the idea all figured out in my head now smile.gif.
Lots of new pics

Removed the light and cut more

Put the light back in, and started planning more

Put the side piece on, and taped it up to foam.

Taped part of the light off again (missed some spots to foam) and foamed the sides on

Drivers side before the side piece

Screwed it on

Huge gap before

Cut and got rid of most of the gap

Ran out of painters tape, and the foam frown.gif but got the drivers side started.

Distance View

Obviously I have a ton more work to do, and ill get to it in a few days, but its coming together alot easier and faster than i imagined honestly smile.gif. And the second light will go in much easier since i know how big the hole must be and how much of the hatch to cut out
feedback?

Where is this car parked? Its not your driveway. Or is it? I noticed you do everything from your swap to this conversion here. And your other car is next to it as well. Its nice that you all that space, if it is private that is.

haha yeah it my house (well my parents house obviously as im only 19). It was an old doctors office they bought and renovated. Theres a front parking lot where everyone else parks, and then me and my brothers have the bottom parking lot. So I have alot of space, unfortunately its not covered, so its a million degrees out there whenever i try to do anything. A big part of why its going so slowly

What are you going to do with the bottom? It's a little odd looking. Seems like it should tuck under or something.

In a few hours im going to go out and be out there hopefully all day. Should get most of it done, as ive only had like 8 hours total to work on it

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW
So I was able to get alot of work done today. It doesnt look like much, and Im not sure how the pics will come out (if you can see the fiberglass or not). But anyway I cut out the other hole for the drivers side tail light.
Basically got it all foamed in, may need a tiny bit more, just to shape it perfect. But for the most part after I sand it down its done.
Got one layer of fiberglass on the whole passengers side. It still dry/curing but in a day or two I will sand it and add another layer (I know it looks unruly, but it will sand down fine, thats just the first layer)
Also got the side piece fiberglassed on, on the bottom.

Pics may be a little out of order. Whenever i upload to photobucket it puts them in like some random order, and I dont have the time to look through them all right now.

Starting out, final foam.

Cut the foam.

Tiny crappy bit of fiberglassing. Ive only done it once and it was a year ago, but it ended up pretty good especially toward the end.

Foamed a bit of the driver side. Ran out of supplies and had to go get more.... Ive spent like $40 on tape lmao

Cut out the other light. Yes its cut all the way through, I saw no other way, but it doesnt even leak now, and its pretty open, be alot more closed then the fiberglass is done.

Before any foam, not even sure if the light had fit yet?

Foamed a bit

Cit it down a bit

Fiberglassed the bottom part. Alot better than the other side.

Now this is the passengers side. Its all fiberglassed now, not sure if these pics show it though

Bonus- found some pics of my house, and took a pic of another project car... i think alot of people will enjoy wink.gif

And I just ran out of fiberglass (got the drivers side 98% fiberglassed). But i dont entirely feel like driving back out to home depot, so I may start prepping the chevelle

Some more chevelle pics. They are really old though. as you can tell my first celi is still red lol. Its alot cleaner now

thanks again. And it truly is easy if you have the time.
Just need patience, and the ability to see past the first stages when youve just ripped your beautiful car apart laugh.gif . I have no real experience dong this stuff (done custom stuff 4 times) and I had no help, it all pretty self explanatory. Working with fiberglass, foam, bondo, ect. is easy to do. And if you mess up, just sand it back down

No but i wish i knew how, I may look into figuring it out for the celica.
Also I added the complete second layer of fiberglass to the rear, but now im completely out of supplies again (used 2 big things of resin and 2 huge sheets of cloth, prob need to do that exact same thing again). Got pics, but it looks just as it did before, ill add them in the next post

easiest way to do glass etching is with acid.
I've done it on glass and alluminum.

once I get free time I may put a how to together, it's pretty easy and ingredients are avaialbe over the counter.

I pay next to nothing for my 70' vette since I don't drive it often. I got a big discount since I drive it less than 3k a year. With the celica and the vette (I'm 23, clean record) its only 600 a year. A second car usually won't add too much to a policy since they already have you insured. I've heard good things about insuring a classic with Hagerty's, but I haven't looked into it since I get such a good deal with being in the military and using USAA. I hope it doesn't run you too much to add the car to your policy.

Keep up the good work, I'm interested to see how all this comes out!

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW
Got the complete second layer on, and sanded down, super smooth smile.gif Theres a few spots where the foam isnt completely even underneath that make divets in some spots, but ill bondo those smooth. Not even sure if you can tell from the pics or not, just before someone tells me

I really dont understand the order in which photobucket uploads pics, cause its not the same order as in my phone, so its hard to tell when the pics are from.
Anyway a few shots of doing the second coat, or just before I sanded not sure

Started to Sand it down. It still needs at least 2 more layers, just to be safe. But those layers will go on super fast, and have minimal sanding cause the shape is pretty good now. Also need to shave down alot under the drivers light as youll see in the later pics its slanted pretty bad lol

Started shaving it down to get the lights in again

How she sits now (yes i notice the drivers light is slanted more than it should be I added too much under it I plan on straightening it out)

Did you cut right through into your trunk? Like into the "cargo area" I guess you could call it.
No offence, but it looks as if you cut it with tin snips..

Its coming together though, looks pretty good.

I like the flow of the car since you put the supra skirts on, it kind of matches the rear of the car now so it doesn't look so awkward. it's coming out great man! i think you should try to do a custom front end cause the invader piece just doesn't flow as well IMO.

haha you should try it smile.gif it is alot of work, but its not really hard work, just time consuming. Wish I had more time to work on it, i think its going pretty slow imo lol

I might go for the trd spoiler, cause it has more "curves". But not a priority now, need to finish this and make it 3s powered smile.gif

hahahaah i was wondering if someone would catch that i snipped the trunk away with tip snips. My grinder wheel wouldnt fit in far enough, and I couldnt have all the vibration from a sawsall. And since i had no other options I sat there and snipped it all away lmao, took forever
And I do want to do a front conversion, just thats alot more expensive with the hood, fenders (maybe), lights, front bumper. It will come after the 3s is complete, as Ill need the front off to work on it, and if its molded, its a bitch to get off lolif not impossible

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NWE

Ok so I added a third, and hopefully final layer of fiberglass. Its pretty much rock solid, but I may add a final coat at the end for good measure.
After the third layer of glass, i bondoed over everything as there were small divets and uneven parts, and its finally really smooth. Still needs a layer or two over that, and the glazing layers. Just to get it 100% smooth, with no imperfections.
I fixed the drivers light, or at least tried to. It looks fine to the eye now.
Only big thing left to do is the bottoms of the sides that I added, as its really hard to get a good shape upside down, cause gravity has its way with fiberglass and bondo. If anyone has any suggestions id like to hear them, if you get what im trying to do.
Anyway a few pics. Just Before sanding bondo and after

But even though the Supra rear is not my cup of tea, I must give you respect for having a crack at this and making it work. I'm sure it will look great once it's finished and painted. Well done.

Only thing i dont like is the bottom part of the bumper where there are spots for the tow hooks. I would remove that section completely it making the ass way too big in comparison to the rest of the celica.

Besides that, its looking smashing.

comming along good, but i would change the type of filler your using, as bondo dont have much flex to it and can crack, then ruin the paint and effort you put into it, i may seem like a spammer but really check out fiberglassforums.com they have some great info on this very sort of stuff....good luck and cant wait to see it done! it really is looking good, just dont want you to have it look fantastic then first drive you take at 60mph cracks the filler....

this is awesome dude is coming along great to be honest there really isnt much that i could say about bondo but in a shop i go to they sell body work stuff and one of the best thing they sell is a product called tiger hair check in one of your local shops they might sell it. the thing for body work its great i used it before and to be honest its way more better then bondo alone great for paint and it last twice as long. good luck anyway cant wait till is finaly finished

thanks everyone smile.gif
I plan on at least cutting the tow hooks off so its even underneath and if it still looks bad i can cut it right off.
As far as kitty hair, i though that was just fiberglass matting? I used 2 layers of that and a layer of fiberglass cloth over it. But ill take a look at that site later.
I used bondo over fiberglass on my sideskirts and old rear, and its been fine for a year + i paint my own car so re spaying a crack would take me 10 mins

^^ Used to be a doctor's office.

I'm not really a fan of trying to make one car look like another. Although the Supra and Celica have a similar shape, the Supra is a bigger car and the size of the lights reflects that. And "similar shape" doesn't mean "same shape."

See how the trunk lid is a lot bigger and the lights are spaced a little further apart? That's what makes the rear of that car work as well as it does and a Celica just can't get that. However, I'm not making this post to be a jerk and put down your work. I really didn't like the way the Supra side skirts went on the car at all, but you're doing a great job with this. I totally respect the amount of time and work you're putting into the car. I completely agree with what Rico said, about how the rear bumper is too big for the car and how it needs to be cut off. My only suggestion would be for the 3rd brake light. I say go with a Supra 3rd brake light as well, rather than the Celica 3rd brake light. The Supra's light is wider than the Celica.

Also, are you moving your exhaust to the driver's side to match the Supra or notching out the passenger side of the bumper?

First thanks again to everyone. i know its not everyones preference, and you may even hate it but i do appreciate everyones respect for the crazy amount of work thats involved (that I really dont have any experience in) smile.gif

Im thinking ill just have the exhaust out the drivers side, like in the picture you posted, since ill be going with a new 3" exhaust with the 3s eventually.

The lights are still the same distance apart though, I never cut into the middle of the supra bumper. And the supra rear is smaller than the celica. The "wheel well bumps" (not sure what to cell that body line) may be a little bigger on the supra, but the actual rear is bigger on the celica.

And thanks for the supra third brake light Idea, I honestly never even thought of it, but It would definitely finish the look. Ill look into buying one next week.

And for what S8S8 said. i agree the stock rear is awesome, especially with jdm tails. But I already have that with my DD. I like doing things out of the ordinary

It looks to me like the bumper you have hangs lower than the bumper in the picture I posted. If you shave yours right there, I think it'd look alright. The trunk lid of the Supra sits up a lot higher from the tail lights than the Celica trunk lid, so the 3rd brake light idea might be a terrible idea. I just like how it's wider than the Celica 3rd brake light so in my mind, it'll flow better with the wider tail lights. I'm really not a fan of trying to make a Celica look like a Supra, but you're doing some pretty good work and I definitely respect that. Besides, you've got the red Celica with the JDM tails and SS-III splitters, so why not do something different with the orange one? No point in making the two look exactly alike.

Yeah I was going to put the 3s in the new celica I bought, and do all the exterior mods (never expected to buy the second car for so cheap). Until bought tinas celica (Iluvmyceli95), and its already really nice, so why ruin it. And like he said, why build two up the same? the one is 'jdm' and "nice" looking, while the other is alot more "aggressive".
Yeah i see what you mean by the bottom, its just cause mine is an after market bumper, and its hitting on the tow hooks. If I can get the tow hooks out, it will "fall back" alot more. And i can also raise it up and attach it to the spare wheel well, so its up higher..... not sure if that made any sense.
But if it ends up being still too much, I can shave it down easy.
And thanks for the props from everyone, I got a good second layer of bondo on today (they are only like 1/8" layers, nothign crazy I do know it can crack if theres alot) But I am helping my friend put his front bumper back together after he hit a curb lol, So I have to wait a bit to do anything.

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW

I got quite a bit of work done today. Although it was alot of tedious shaving away tiny bits to get a perfect fit, so it may look like not much got done.
Also realized the drivers side light doesnt have the weather stripping that the passengers side does so the fitment is alot harder. But the passengers side is 90% done now, actually amazed by how close I got it pretty easily

Decided to fill in under the lights at a slope, instead of just right under it with the fiberglass.

Put the light in, and started filling in the very edges, to get a better fit

Got the lights out and back in, also got the pass side very close to done.

Drivers side, still needs alot of work, and its not completely dry yet. I needed it to be a little tacky still to get easy cuts

QUOTE (whatthe @ Jul 29, 2011 - 8:58 PM) *
Only thing i dont like is the bottom part of the bumper where there are spots for the tow hooks. I would remove that section completely it making the ass way too big in comparison to the rest of the celica.

Besides that, its looking smashing.

i agree.. remove that whole section and ur good!.

i think if you took out that bottom portion completely.. (tow hook area and sides) and maybe add a set of splitters... (kinda like the pic of the silver supra someone posted earlier) would look really nice... just my opinion.. i still think it looks great and ur doing a great job... as far as the 3rd brake light.. id just remove it completely. im a big fan of shaved stuff, i shaved everything...all washer nozzles antenna fender reflectors brake light rear wiper.. but like i said just my opinion LOOKING GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^ Truth

+ consider getting rid of the cut out for where the supra exhaust goes and make it on the rhs since thats where the celica exhaust goes. On the topic of exhaust, it needs a massive burnt tip exhaust that makes alot of noise. And also needs a big wing, serious.

thanks everyone, I got some work done yesterday too. No pics cause it was all very little tedious stuff so it looks the same from a distance.
Im gonna leave the tow hooks area alone until the rest is done, then ill play around with it. Just like getting one thing done at a time.
I already shaved that freakishly ugly rear wiper last time I painted, and Im deff going to shave the antenna, as I havent listened to the radio in like a year since i got an ipod and now a droid. In the very long run i want to look into door poppers, but that wont be for a long time

And the exhaust will be exactly as you described smile.gif But im still debating keeping the drivers side exit, or dual exhuast And i plan on getting a trd wing.

Just my opinion though.

I don't dig it, why don't you just reshape the license plate garnish and mould in the gap for supra tails ....

i dont hate it, since im not the one that has to be seen in it, but damn.... i wouldnt be caught dead in that lol

what are you gonna do about the portion behind tail lights? and what about the hatch to make it look nice smooth and look like it was never cut?

as far as molding the lights into my old bumper, I think it would look terrible, and if im already doing the work why not just get an actual supra bumper, if thats the look im going for? And its been done alot more than molding a whole new rear on.
I havent really thought of what im going to do behind the lights, cause i have the plastic part that goes behind the whole rear, and the gigantic speaker box that makes it virtually unseeable.
The actual hatch Ive been giving some thought to though, and i could use some advice i guess.
Im pretty sure i can get it pretty damn smooth with the grinder. Then maybe just lay some resin or glazing putty over it to smooth it out all the way. But then again that may not work at all lol, i dont know what im doing its just trial and error.
Hopefully after work i can get something done, but its not looking that way

When it rains, isn't the water going to drain right into your trunk?

no the water kind of drains between the trunk and the bumper, its rained quite a few times and its never gotten wet inside, even with the light not in, leaving a huge hole. but After everythings done, ido plan on looking into it a bit more. maybe making a sort of draining system for it

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW

Got up sold my old bumper to a guy, and had alllllll day to work on the supra rear. And its now basically finished. I need to finish the bumper to wheel well, which I needed to take the wheels off for and put it off till everything else was done. Also a little tiny bit more shaping on the bottom corner pieces. And the actual hatch which wont take long at all.

All the pics basically look the same, just different angles of it almost done. Obviously there are things that need improvement, but its definitely getting close
And yes there is about an inch of bondo dust around the car lol
Thanks to everyone who supported, even if it wasnt ur taste smile.gif

Shots of using the glazing putty

Found this awesome filler primer too. i already had it like 99.9% smooth, but it filled in tiny little holes of dips. Only bought a can of it, so its not completely consistent. Ill end up painting the whole car at once too, so its going to look like this for a while.

Wheel well still need to be finished like I said, but i got too excited and just painted it lol

Thanks everyone smile.gif
I prob wont get to finish it anytime soon, as ive been neglecting other things to get it done which is catching up lol. But itll get done. And If i find buyers for my old front, lights, and hood I may do the front conversion. But im a little more hesitant, as I still need to get the 3s in first
I know alot of people think just one supra conversion is too much, but im already 2/3 there. Why not go all out? smile.gif granted this will be the hardest, most time consuming, most expensive part.
Anyone think I should?
