I'm in this community for ages and as I remember there always been 6GC.NET calendar. I do not want to talk about what happened last year. I would like to talk about what will happen this year.

I really would like to see next year on my wall 6GC.NET calendar. Question is what needs to be done to make this happen.

- I know there is needed approval from the owner (to use 6GC.NET logo)
- I know there is needed to find the best 12pictures around (or 14... 12months, cover and bonus month for 2013.. whatever)
- I know there is needed someone who manage this
- I know there is needed deadline. Soon enough deadline to have calendar in December 2011 delivered.

and I also know it is not any hard to manage this. Last year I made one for Celica Czech Republic Club. We made deadline for pictures in October and a month ago I was sending finished calendars... see the topic http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=76445 that's it. Nothing more needed.

My point is. If I'm able to manage 20 calendars for $17 internationally delivered each from CZ... anyone in US can do the same for similar price. So... how hard could it be to see 6GC.NET calendar 2012 on the wall?

I would love to have this happen too this coming year. I know we can use the cars from this years "celica of the month" competitions. and we could do a special vote for the front.

here's to seeing it!

I'd be ready to buy a calendar for sure. Funny that you mention the CZ calendar, I was flipping through mine just before opening this thread. Coincidence.

Rough pricing from here in Aus are roughly:
(AUD)
$15 for calendar
$10 - $20 postage.
Postage is Air Mail. Not too sure how long that takes.

Everyone should check around, they're fair simple to make smile.gif

Sticking to an idea of COTM history of last 12months we can have this set of pictures. As cover picture I would just use current featured car (so COTM May 2011 car). It deserve it.
NOTE: COTM October 2011 is just my personal choice for display purpose only!
I know it is not chosen yet. I just like that picture. That is all:

How do you like the possible set of pictures?

- It is just list of 12+1 COTMs. I have not investigated if anyone is there more than once or about who in what month... smile.gif just October 2010 - October 2011. No issue to skip someone (who is twice) and continue to September 2010 or even more far... because for example if anyone do not have picture in high resolution it is useless for calendar anyway.

- yea white cars... that is why I put those pictures of COTMs on one place. To see how it looks and if this is the right way to go or not. maybe would be good to take all COTM winners so far and make poll to select the best 12+1. It should make calendar more variabe in terms of colors...

...and the remaining set (already posted).

This is complete list of all COTMs...

Are you volunteering to make it Martin? Because year after year people fail epically. I reckon you would do a good job.

Luke... in case 3 facts below are no issue I will be glad to do it:

1. I'm not graphic designer so it may look more amateur than expected. Sure I will do my best. But still I'm only enthusiast amateur in terms of design.
2. I'm not sure if I can handle to remove CZ holidays from calendar sheet... I mean to add all US holidays (or any UK if wanted) can be done for sure. But do not know if they can change "the base line" (I believe it is called "print matrix" or something) of calendar days and remove for example "CZ national day - 28th October" from there. I would need to talk to printer company first.
3. Total price (announced $17 shipped) will work only with some minimum amount of calendar. I believe 20 or 30 (need re-check). If less amount price can raise up to $30 = price for one piece made shipped. That means amount of interested must be known in advance to know how much money to collect. Sure there can be more than one batch. But still final price depends on amount of printed calendars in one batch.

That is experience I have. Anyway I can share with more details later today or tomorrow about printer, possible layout, amounts, etc.

EDIT:
I have send mail to printer company about that "calendar sheet matrix" so we will see... if you do not get what I mean see example below:

calendar 210x210mm (8.3x8.3inch) - open on the wall has 8.3x16.6inch!
- design as below that means one picture used for upper part (can be fully designed as we wanted)
- lower part calendar sheet has CZ language and European style that means week starts with Monday + CZ holidays marked red the same way as Sundays (not seen in the picture below)

So I found as "plan B" an option in case calendar days are issue

calendar 297x210mm (11.7x8.3inch)
design as below that means one picture (again can be designed as we wanted) plus just numbers below as days of each month (yellow marked Sundays).

now prices for that 8.3x16.6inch
one (final shipped price):
1piece = $30
from 3pieces = $25 each
from 10pieces = $19 each
from 30pieces = $17 each
from 50pieces = $15 each

note: that "plan B" one (11.7x8.3inch) is cheaper (again delivered prices)...
1piece = $21
from 3pieces = $16 each
from 10pieces = $13 each
from 50pieces = $11 each

I like the original design, but I'm thinking option B, being wider, might suit vehicle photos better.

My vote would be for the 2nd option.

As Ferdi says, the A4 landscape layout is better for cars, the simpler layout is less work for you as you don't have to worry about language and holidays... Plus the lower price means you'll get more customers smile.gif

Agree. Personally I like that 2nd more nut in therms of variability is better that 1st option wink.gif . I show you why... People usually makes pictures in 3 formats:

4:3
3:2
16:9

The most common is 3:2 (because is used as default in SLR cameras). But you can find in selection of COTMs also pure 4:3 or 16:9 ones.

Now... that first option of calendar is technically square working area when we can place anything we want:

For 4:3 format = untouched (no cropping)

Two options for 16:9 format (sorry for using again this picture as example but he is good example of 16:9 there) = must be modified. first added black stripes, second cropped like shown below.

that second option of calendar is just 16:9 working area (rest is used for calendar):

For 4:3 format = must be cropped (not sure how would work using black stripes on sides there in the end. maybe yes, maybe no. see below)

result is here

For 16:9 format = untouched (no cropping)

Note: that 3:2 format must be cropped in both options (in first to make it more square and in second make it more wide) but since it is "in the middle" there is no problem to use calendar option A or B. So no issues with 3:2 pictures at all.

And in terms of customers... 6gc.net people are not "customers". Only who has profit is printer company. Not me. I just use their price-list and provide photos (prepared by my self so zero costs for graphic designer). Nothing else. That means technically "I do not care" how many people will buy calendar. The same effort for me (ordering one or fifty calendar) and same "profit" (zero or zero smile.gif ).

Only what I want is: if I spend time and effort on this I want you like the result.

It does depend on the photos that will be used in the calendar.
For example, most photos that i have taken, have been quite larger photos in which i have resized already.

Once the photos have been chosen for the calendar, some people may be able to 'edit' their selected photo to match the criteria better.

For example, in the 16:9 photo where you cropped mine, i could re edit the original photo to make it fit the 16:9/4:3 area better.
Example 2: With TRDGT4's.. he may also have a larger photo of that shot, in which he can resize, so half the car isn't cut out.

In saying this though, half people would have access to this, the other half wouldn't. Although most winners so far are widescreen shots.

If you want a real good looking calendar, you may have to compromise with certain photo's/members

...

Good point... so let's not make choice by format but by our choice what design of calendar is better for us. In terms of this I would prefer that "B plan" one because it is more easy to prepare and international enough for everyone.

There are a few online calendar creators around Malpaso, unless your 100% happy with that one, there could be more possibilities elsewhere.

I just found one located in Australia, where the A4 page is horizontal, with the traditional style calendar.
Once again, has australian holidays AND most of the images taken from the 'COTM' sticky of the winners were low quality, could be a little blurry.

Props to you making the effort though smile.gif

Edit: Take a look at this http://www.mediafire.com/?cu9dll3idbpo3tt A preview of one i made. You can see the quality of some photos/the need of better photos.

Great! I have nothing against OZ holidays smile.gif. Already have US and UK on the wall so no issues at all wink.gif Anyway.

- I have feeling not many people showed enthusiasm to see this project running so question is if there is any sense starting it. Especially those 12 from calendar must agree to be there. From my point of view in my case cheaper B option we talk about $13 (delivered) for calendar. So worst scenario is find nine interested (I keep no 10 my self) and can manage "ultra limited calendar collection". No problem smile.gif).

- Still there is question rights. That means would that be official calendar with 6gc.net logo on it or just "calendar of cars from 6gc.net" (no logo used). I prefer official one but respect local policy.

Would be nice to decide "go/no-go" when we have new COTM latest because to collect high res photos from everyone takes time and choosing 12 from 18 as well.

I'd assume it would have to be' official' seeing as half have 6GC stickers on their cars.

If the photos are going to turn out good and not be blurry etc, I'm defo down for 1. 2 even if my car gets in there haha.

I do the GT4OC calendar every year for free....make it downloadable via pdfs and free to every member, I use simple program like paintshop combined with MS Excel and it seems to work OK...I'm no graphic designer either but I enjoy doing it.

Just start a thread for 2012 calendar entries, hope that enough people submit photos then put them together...with a large and active community such as this it shouldnt take long to gather enough pictures...you'll need about 150 photos to put together a calendar similar to the style I do...you wont use them all but it gives you a choice

the only problem with this site is that you cant add attachments..(if you can I havnt figured out how to yet) to allow people to uploead them to their machines to print them off.

Agree to the letter smile.gif. You make whole calendar your self and you do great job btw! You just forgot to say there is also an option buy "hard-copy" of the calendar as well. That is why GT4OC.NET calendar is hanging on my wall this year and I hope will hand as well another...
I do not want to do it complete. Just use company that makes calendars and send 13 prepared pictures there (to match design the best) and done. A lot less work than you do every year mate.

News for today...
- just 4 from the list below not read my message about high-res photos (so even if it stay like this and they ignore it we are exactly at number 12+1)
- I have already received pictures from Driveby, Rob_A, Rusty,TRDGT4 and Timmyface (so with my one we are half ready to go biggrin.gif)
- Another two promised to send pictures today.
- So far about 1/3 of COTM winners do not have the winning picture in high resolution so we we would need to figure out what to do with that. Just remove them from the list? (there are 4 extra winners anyway) ...or manage new voting from all collected no matter if it is replacement picture or original? (so find real best of the best). IMO we will see in few days... I still do not believe all COTM winners will respond my message and will be glad having 12+1 pictures in the end.

Today I have not received any new pictures and still have 4 unread messages from COTM winners frown.gif. Meanwhile I have tried to prepare design of calendar... I hope it will motivate you a bit:

Main idea is:
- to have picture with days in month below (Sundays are red). In this case used January as an example.
- two thumbnail pictures with picture from previous and next month (in this case it is like December and February)
- 6gc.net logo (I have already asked Coomer for permission. I hope he will answer soon)
- month name in four languages (English, Estonian, German and Czech = all possible languages of COTM winners... I hope all smile.gif) and year.

Sure it is just an idea. It can change under circumstances... I wish I had all pictures ready and prepared by the end of this month to be able to send it to printer. Planned like this it can be in mail in a month from now so by the end of next month in your homes.

Thanks for replies folks. So far it seems everyone who simply whats to participate already answered and the rest just do not care (or do not have enough time or looking for the source or maybe... do not have the picture in high-res at all). I just starting to believe to take winning pictures of COTM is not best idea at all because there is no rule the winning picture must be available in high resolution as well. Anyway to move thing forward...

1) to minimize risk there is no high res-photo available we can make calendar (not necessary all months, just some if needed) like this:

Two or maybe even more smaller pictures of the car. Yes I took inspiration in UK... see the GT4OC.NET calendar example:

2) if you want to see calendar in your hands before Christmas we do not have much time to waste!

- 24th of December delivered all around the world (America, Europe, Australia) it must be send a month before to be sure everyone has it by the Christmass at home.
- To have it 24th of November ready it must be send to printing company 10days before... that is 14th of November.
- It is nice to have a week reserve in case anything happens... so deadline for all pictures prepared 7th of November.
- 1st of November we should know for 100% this calendar happens to be able to start collecting money (and give everyone 14days for successful Paypal transaction)

That is just 2 weeks to go!

In those two weeks I must have enough pictures to be able to create 12+1 pages to print in sufficient resolution. I really no not want blurry or pixelate pictures in there... this calendar do not deserve it. So...

If we really want this calendar happens I need pictures. And What I'm really afraid of I will not collect even 12 from all COTM winners. That is why I would suggest if I do not receive them to ask anyone here to provide picture for calendar. In case there are more (than just few to fill calendar) people interested to be in there lets make it like UK guys and place more different cars at one page.

thanks for opinion

OK... I'm not giving this up. Few more people wrote me and confirmed they send pictures. For example thanks to Timmyface's enthusiasm I have more than just one or two pictures I can use... so here is another option (my favorite):

Four pictures, one selected as "main" (according to layout). No matter about aspect ratio... all can be used and designed in many ways. It keeps COTM picture there (even if not in proper resolution because it can be used as smaller picture) plus any 3 other of the same car. The "main" one should be the biggest res as possible... see another example:

What you think? Only what I need is 12+1 people who agree to send me pictures i can use... I prefer already selected COTM winners but if there is no interest (not 12+1 pictures collected) let anyone to participate to fill all 12months.

I believe this is the chance to have one of the best calendars made. Just need few more really good looking pictures from people here.

The layout of your car looks sweet man.
You know my thoughts on this so tongue.gif I have an abundant amount of photos i can use, so i'm set tongue.gif
I may even go get similar images in the same area, so it looks more of a set like yours smile.gif

If thats the deal (which im quiet liking atm) whats the average size of the photo area, so i can have a fiddle with different layouts etc.

I know I don't look at the general discussion a whole lot because I get so caught up in B/S, project, engine/maint. etc. that I never make it to this part of the forum. I almost didn't see it.... for like weeks. So maybe we should see what we can do about spreading the word. I.e. you should put a feeler up in the buy/sell

Hey guys, was thinking of making a 6gc.net 2012 calendar, I have a thread started here (linky) that has all the information on it. If you're interested in supplying pictures or buying plz pm asap

Something like that would be great I feel. Just to get it out there in other parts of the forum.

I like the multi photos with the different angles and layouts for each month.

A different layout of each month would look great.

For example

Jan

Feb

Mar

Agree to the letter... but for this I need more pictures to goose. For example TRDGT4 has send me 8 high resolution pictures so had pretty free hands for any layout I can imagine. The same with Timmyface. Thanks to his topic with pictures I had like 10 images to use (for smaller pictures is 1024x768 enough). That is why I really like Timmy's layout with 4 pictures. Layout used with my pictures is very hard because are needed panoramic pictures from two different angles (and even my self I have those just a few). So more pictures in higher resolutions I have more options of layout I can use.

Some updates in terms of the calendar:
- According to "Message Tracker" still four COTm winners not ever read my first request about pictures. IMO we can forget they participate (because of any reason)
- I have pictures to fill six months
- I have another four COTM winners that confirmed they are interested (but so far have not received pictures)
- If we ask new next month COTM there is possible another one...

Still there is one month and cover picture missing. That means would need two more interested anyway to make this happen. We will see in a week what happens. I do not want let down anyone who send pictures so far but without enough pictures available from others there is no sense to continue.

btw.: today I have ordered Celica Club Czech Republic calendar 2012. It will be ready in 10 days from now because printing company is too busy with other orders. Another reason to not waste time with waiting.

To be specific, I know you are looking for cotm winners. But if this is a 6gc.net calendar, shouldn't it be made of the coolest cars we have, even if they haven't won cotm? I think a rally celi like his, breathing the true blood of these things, should be eligible. How awesome would it be to have visible evidence of the awd in full action on dirt? My .02

I'm sure malpasso is all for it, but he is after high res photos for a reason. So there's not a single blurry or out of place looking photo. I'm sure if czwalga had a high res looking photo it'd get used.

Most of the photos being used are/looks like professional photography.
I doubt malpasso would want to throw in a low res, grainy dirt picture in the mix, unless it was a professional looking photo.

But, the way it seems to be going, any photos are of help.

Situation is like this. First idea was to make calendar only with pictures from COTM winners. Unfortunately:

- Not even half of COTM winers send me picture of the car so far
- Not all COTM winning picture are made in high resolution...

So I have looked at old calendars I have and realized QUALITY OF PICTURE MATTERS! So I really need to send to printer company 12 months + cover sheet at 3508x2480 pixels. Not less. No blurry pictures. No pixelate pictures.

From now I do not care if picture I receive is COTM winner or not. I take ANY good looking pictures in maximum resolution as possible. It is not important if there is one 3508x2480 picture or 4x 1600x1200 once. Together it must be 3508x2480. That is why I prefer to receive more pictures and taken from more angles to not make it boring. Of course if there is more than 12+1 interested priority has COTM winner. That is all.

EDIT: to let you understand better... Here is one example. I have received pictures from salv as COTM winner. He has send three pictures at resolution 1024x678... so his page on calendar would look like this:

Or when printed with this resolution will do this:

I'm really glad for his response but... this material is for printing useless frown.gif.

I feel like the picture wont actually look THAT bad. It's very very zoomed in here. We don't need that kind of close up do we? with that image being the entire car, I don't think it would be THAT bad.

To me, if it means having a calendar with some great cars means that a few months have to suffer in the quality, then so be it. But his other pictures just as you showed them there didn't look terrible as they sat on my screen. and as i walk past this every day, I'm not going to stop and think, wow, what a semi-grainy pic that is on my wall that I can't even tell the difference unless I stop and stare... ya know?
just my .02

especially if we do the multiple shot look - the resolution doesn't need to be as high for that... (3 on the side, one in the middle)

When you try to print picture 1024x768 at A4 size paper you exactly see this. It is because A4 size for printing is 3508 x 2480 (so like 3.5x more). If you have Calendar 2008 see August and you find out what I'm talking about.

The news! As you see above things moved forward and situation is more optimistic now smile.gif . Here is the list of pages for now:

Cover: probably mix of COTM pictures or something... or mix of pictures from inside. Could be anything.
January: Lil-Joe101 - first batch of pictures received and waiting for another so what you see above is not probably finished page.
February: BASSI
March: Rusty
April: Driveby
May: TRDGT4
June: Urputus
July: Rob_A
August: Tigerwoods - I really hope you handle to prepare pictures. Picture from you simply must be there.
September: Timmyface
October: Malpaso
November: ????
December: ????

I still hope for response from some people so believe we fill those two missing months. I have asked at least four people with valuable pictures and photography skills so... we are close to the successful end!

Backup plan is fill those two months and cover with any of available picture. Or I can use some picture I made during PECM or GT-Four driver's Club meeting but I really prefer everyone in there agree to be in calendar. Here is an example:

Or this one... only disadvantage is my car is messing up there (because I made it as "Father & Son family picture" biggrin.gif).

It is a shame that some of the good Cotm photos aren't high res or giving a reply.
I'm liking the one of Marco's as a backup. And the layout of the 'calendar' one looks sweet. Liljoes is a bit out of place as a large interior imo.

I'm sure you'll pull this off. Pm 808 for some pics tongue.gif

- That's true... I really wanted to see in calendar this car:

...and this one:

Both simply MUST exist in high resolution because picture like this you just can not make by cell phone smile.gif. Unfortunately I have not received anything from them so far.

- Good thing about Marco is he is in fact COTM winner smile.gif so even if his picture is not in high resolution I can use my pieces wink.gif.

- Lil-Joe101 has good pictures and want them to send me but so far his mail deny to cooperate smile.gif. So I still believe I receive better material from him.

- I do not want to disappoint anyone deny his pictures so from now I do not ask anyone for any picture. Reason is I did that last two weeks and now will only wait till Sunday for results. Than we will see where we are...

Lil Joe, try sending multiple smaller emails to Martin.
When I reached over 15mb I think it was, it wouldn't send.

So send a few emails with 1 or 2 images, and see if that helps.

And yeah, I wanted to see Nammers, Ricos etc.

BTW. news! What you see below is confirmed page of calendar. COTM winner Marco agree with this option so it will be used smile.gif

So when I finish Lil-Joe101's page... receive pictures from Tigerwoods and confirm content for December (an it should be anyone!) we are ready for printing woot.gif .

just sent my pictures in

Pictures received so I will prepare your month later today... Anyway... I have more news for today:

- I have received like 150MB of pictures from vidmav so design of his page will change. And since I prefer to use pictures from the car owner instead of mines this change is a must.
- I have received tons on great pictures from Orange so made decision to replace BASSI on February (because BASSI is now only one who has pictures from me, not send own once). So it is not about one car is better than another. It is about one person made more effort to be on calendar and I want take this into consideration.
- Since calendar is full and I have one spare (BASSI) his car will be used on the cover instead announced one. His car deserve it.

From now is calendar 100% finished!

EDIT ("later today"):

Here it is... Tigerwoods

new page for Orange:

And so far still two options for vidmav:

And finally the cover with BASSI ...

DAMN! damn good point... thank you for correction.

Final news: I have realized to change layout of lower part a bit. No multiple language months. Just English and Japanese from obvious reasons smile.gif

I would like to make a small summary from making this calendar because I believe there are some "lessons learnt" worths to share smile.gif

The most important is to have good pictures
I know it may sound stupid but using in calendar picture just because someone voted for it and not thinking about "printing possibilities" is not vise at all. I was so surprised COTM winners simply do not have pictures in high resolution? (and 1024x768 is really not high resolution). In the future if there is any calendar selection of pictures must have much different criteria than so far had because we need to ask question: Do we want good looking calendar or calendar with just exact cars inside and no matter how it will look printed?

More pictures on page are looking better than just one
When 2012 calendar was finished I was surprised i like more pages where are 3-4 pictures used than just 2. Maybe anyone else will have different opinion but for me it was big surprise. So maybe would be good to think about calendar in the future bit different way. I will use GT4OC.NET calendar as example... pictures for it were collected like 6months and ANYONE could participated with ANY resolution of picture. Small resolution = small picture... hight resolution = big picture. So you want your car be seen? make decent picture! That is all smile.gif

As you can see there are like 12 pictures used on one page! So amount of pictures on page should be variable. it just depends on how many people will participate and how many pictures in enough.

Timing and pricing matters!
Must share with one unexpected fact. We started with this calendar sooner than in previous years (that is good because there are 6 weeks to deliver all calendars... so even members from other side of the globe will have it by the end of this year for sure). Anyway... if we were started for a month sooner it would be even better. What happened is printing company changed prices before Christmas and exchange rate of $ changed as well. Thanks to this I needed to donate every calendar with 60cents in the end. That was impact of simple fact I wanted this calendar as cheap as possible and did not counted with things like this. I do not complain! If I did not wanted to I would not do that... Anyway... next time would be good to start even sooner and add like one dollar to price for "just in case" reason.

I don't know for others, but I love "our" calendar, with several pistures of only one car on the page

This one for example is my favourite bowdown.gif
And if you want that we cover your loss, I would love to help =)
