This site has been going downhill. Some of you may have noticed
this...others are no longer here because of it. No-one knows this better
than myself. Little things turn into big arguments and many act as if
they're elite or just have bad attitudes in general. It's been this way
for too long, but enough is enough. It's going to stop.

Years ago, I knew nothing about my car. I bought it not even realizing
that there were seperate hatchback and coupe models. I started this site
with little knowledge myself, and as time went by, the site grew
quickly, as did my knowledge of the Celica. Fast forward to today, and I
drive one of the most unique and fun cars on the street. I've met dozens
of cool people and helped a lot of people out, and I've always had fun
doing it.

This site is a resource for the sixth generation Toyota Celica. Lately
though, it's felt more like a playground. People run around saying
whatever they want with little regard to others. Some people seem like
they're here to learn and contribute. Others may have just forgotten the
purpose of the site but can shape up and behave. Some seem like they're
just here to cause trouble. And then there are a few who have attitudes
as if they're elite.

Let me say this. No-one is better than anyone else here. You should
treat the guy who registered yesterday with with the same level of
respect that you show to me. Let me talk about respect for a minute. You
don't have to like everyone here, but you must treat everyone with
respect. There's no room for negative comments towards others or their
cars or an elitist attitude.

My main point with this letter is that the 6G Celicas community is
hurting. Smart, contributing members are being driven away by all the
garbage and negativity. As are brand new members, some with very little
knowledge like we ALL once had.

Some of you may remember the Celica.net days. Had I come to Celica.net
with my new car and no knowledge, posted a simple question, and received
a bombardment of disrespect and no answers, I would have left. I
wouldn't be here today. This site wouldn't be here today. But no, I was
greeted and treated with respect. People politely answered my questions
and pointed me in the direction of the search engine. I learned, and I
turned around and returned the favor by means of building this site to
help people out. My point is that everyone on here needs to be treated
with respect. You never know who might be the next pioneer.

The fact is that we're hurting ourselves. People are being driven away.
This may not be sad for some of you, but for those who love the sixth gen.
Celica and are here to learn and contribute, it's a tragedy.

It's time for a change, and change is coming. The choice is yours. If you're
here to learn and contribute and you want the community to live on, I'm
glad and I hope you enjoy it here. If you want to have a bad attitude and
cause problems, please leave now. If you think you're elite and are going
to post with that attitude that you're better than everyone else, please
leave now.

We need everyone's help to change and turn the site around. New rules
are now online. Everyone needs to follow them, or there will be consequences.

Management will be using the member warning system much more and we
won't hesitate to stop members who don't follow the rules from posting
without moderator approval.

This forum can be great. It's going to once again be great. We need all of your
help, and we need it now.

Thank You,
Christian Coomer

P.S.
  • Again, new rules are available here.
  • The feedback system for buyers/sellers will be online shortly.
  • On each post, you'll see a "Report This Post" link to the left under the author's details. If you find that a post is inappropriate, please use this link to report it.
  • 3-Letter searching isn't available on my current hosting setup(I asked and they said no.) I need a dedicated server, and that'll be probably $150-200 a month, so once the member subscriptions system is online, I should be able to fund that, move the site to a new dedicated server, and implement 3-letter searching.

I cant wait for 3 letter searching! What is the member subscriptions system?

by the way, i think its gotten better moreso than like a year ago, i think that was the last time you posted about the site going downhill and added more moderators (there were only a few at that time) so comign from a member thats been here a while in my opinion it has improved.

the only thing ive seen ridiculous recently is the MD meet thread where playr and yungazz faught and someone said they were gonna bring some guy to fight and stupid crap like that, but i do believe they made up.

I think most members want to help as much as they can,
some talk more smak than others. I hope I never come
off to another member as being better in anyway than
them or talking down. If I have ever done this I apologize,
it was never my intention. It's hard to see the same questions
asked over and over an still be patient with people. I will do
my best to help others .
It is a great site and anything we can do to make it better is always
good.

Ever since I've first visited this site, I've loved it smile.gif
You Coomer, moderators and the members have
made it a wonderful place to read and discuss
things that we all share a passion for.
I have notice some argument among members, and am
very disappointed when reading those posts.
I hope I have not offended anyone here yet.
I would hate to see this site go down because of something silly as this.
I would know how to spend my free time tongue.gif

Very well put Coomer.

I'm very happy about this, I want to see this site back to where is used to be. I will be watching as many posts as I can. With a little help from everybody, we can stop the attitudes some people have and turn this place right around.

If you need some friendly help you can count on me. smile.gif

It breaks my heart when I see this post. I knew things were getting out of hand, but I can't believe it's gotten to this point. I'm glad that something is now being done, but sad that something has to be done. I agree with all the new rules. I thought they all were kind of unspoken on here in the first place. I'll try my best to do my part around here.

Coomer.....I'm an addict. Hi, my name is Jim and I'm an addict. Ask any of my roommates, or close friends. I am on this site religously when ever Im not at work or school. You cant put a price on the vast amount of information I've learned from those more knowledgable then me. For this I say, Thank you. In person Im am a sarcastic dipwad, but now that I see the impact that it can have on this community, you can count on me to be helpful in anyway.

This place is bursting with knowledge about anything and everything under the sun that has to do with the Celica. When I came here I was treated kindly, even though my questions were probably the most basic of questions. I am so glad I found this place. I don't know what I would be doing if I hadn't.

I've been a member on this forum since the year 2002, one of the old timers......and I agree with everything Christian had to say. I encourage people to ask questions and hope others will answer them. I don't post much because I can usually find everything I need to know on this site through others asking the same questions I have. Even if someone asks the exact same question, for some reason......I notice that there is always new information for them. So yeah, don't bash on people regardless of what they're asking.......maybe someone else have the same question too. I myself will continue to contribute to this site, I hope others will do the same and stop the hate.

Well, I see that you are saying that the web is getting worser because of people flipping out. But common just go and look at honda forums and you will see that on here we have way better people. I dont ever remember reading a reply "USE SEARCH" or "NOOB" on this forum. Keep it up, I love the layout of this forum smile.gif

Well said coomer , shame you had to eventually say it though .
I use this site more than the mainly british site because its so much better , the people are nicer and a lot more informative !
Somebody needs to do the same with toyotaownersclub.com because its even worse , the people(well a small minority) just hate any mods you do etc etc ..... its gone right downhill frown.gif

I still believe we have the best website of any car make/model biggrin.gif and we need to keep it that way

I'm like CelicaSTX02, I've been a member since the site first started and seen it grow from a handful of 6GC owners who posted on one forum at celica.net (not that makes me better than the guy who joined yesterday). I hardly ever post, but I've been reading almost everything thats been posted over the years and have definatly noticed the slump the forums have been in. I hope everyone takes the time to read this thread and really takes it to heart, coomer couldn't be more right!

I've seen some of the most knowlegeable and helpful members come and go, I'd hate for us to loose some due to such childish behavour. Just remember why we are all here, we all share the same passion regardless of our knowledge level or joined date.

RE: 4. Please refrain from posting pointless posts, such as posts that are just smilies or posts that say stuff like "I'm with stupid" or "Page 2 Owned!"). This includes sarcastic posts about making fun of someone's car, or playful arguing with one another in a thread. These posts simply take over threads and turn them into useless garbage. Remember, the point of these forums is to discuss the sixth generation Celica.

What if someone says "hey what do you guys think of: so and so..."? Personally I like to give a thumbs up maybe or thumbs down because I'm simple and honest, is this going to be a problem?

I love this site biggrin.gif

I do see some negativity tho around it and it does put a negitave vibe in ya when you read it... Thats what I've noticed anyways...

I hope to see that put to an end too... cuz I dunno there's been times where I didnt wanna post things cuz I was a little afraid of getting ripped apart...

So I really hope your letter gets the point out, coomer smile.gif But I have a good feeling it did thumbsup.gif

I think Coomer is refering to pointless gifs or posts. A thumbsup.gif or thumbsdown.gif is fine.

Or you could post something like

I too am a member that has been here since the start. I also have noticed the unneeded comments here and there, and will welcome the return to the days when everyone were friends and just wanted to help each other out.

Although i must say it was not at all unexpected. People on the internet seem to think that if they can say it, then they must. Then they seem to hide behind the mantra; "well thats who i am, i just speak my mind." I doubt they would be as frank to a stranger they have just met in person.

just my 2 cents,

none of my post has never been unanswered and none of my pm either.

and the more experienced guys are always so willing to help,

those that complain, they seem to forget that when others come to seek their help in their own line of expertise, and the person doesn't do the basic research, they get pissed too, so b4 u comment on this forum and the general attitude, sit down and be in others shoes.

i'm not the most knowledgablf of members but this site is the only site for 6th gens. i havent found anywhere else on the net with this much knowledge and ideas flowing from it. I agree with my short membership here there has been ups and downs but if i have any questions about anything, with research, I can find the answer, most of the time more in depth than i even thought. LOL this site should be my homepage because i go here automatically when i get on the net at home, at school, and now on my road trip in Wyoming(pics soon). KEEP UP THE GREAT SITE/WORK

I've also been around this site since its very early days, which is about four years it looks like. This has always been a very friendly and helpful site, and I've learned and grown along with the site.

I can remember back when stuffing a 3SGTE under the hood seemed impossible, and when turboing the 5SFE and 7AFE was virgin territory for us guys, and finding yourself a good bodykit was pretty tough. Now theres members converting to AWD and new swaps being done all the time, and several members who offer their services and skills to fellow members as their job.

It has certainly changed alot from the early days. Lets all take Coomer's advice and become better members and contributers and make this place just like it used to be.....its come a long way and can only get better. smile.gif

I think alot of it has to do with the fact that alot of people here are young and immature. ANd that is what alot of young kids do is pick fights and prove that they are better than everyone else. And if i have i never intentionally offended anyone on this site. Very well said though Coomer.

Everyone needs to remember that we are basically Coomer's guests here. We have no automatic right to be a member of this Forum. Coomer does all the hard graft of keeping it running while we use it. If someone fails to abide by Coomer's rules, then they can't complain if they aren't allowed to join in.
I for one have also noticed a change in the short time I have been here. And what spoils it the most for me is the amount of references to illegal street racing. Okay, I'm in another country, but it still worries me that this type of stuff goes on. Okay, I'm not going to stop it, but while people tolerate it being posted about and contribute to the thread, then it is going to remain 'acceptable' to do. Give any moron an audience and they will perform.
Let's keep this as a proper forum where people can vcome to gain and share knowledge. Not as a place where people can hide behind a monitor and act like a 5 year old.

I've been coming to site this since mid january but i just signed up earlier this month. The reason why I decided to actually sign up was because I've learned quite a bit from it and the atmosphere has been so warm and friendly. I'm proud to be a Celica owner and even moreso of being part of this community. smile.gif

This letter really makes a lot of sense, especially for me a new comer when I joined mid last year. I believe people have different preferences and styles but most of all people come here to socialize but most importantly, help each other like a family. well said, Coomer!

snobby elite?

I would like to know who these people are because I have no idea who you are referring to. Please list user names and feel free to use mine if thats who you are referring to. I really want to know what you base this characterization on. Perhaps you are referring to people who have knowledge and take the time to help people.

Maybe you think some are "snobby" simply because they know the answer to a question and have the audacity to type it out and help someone because you assume that they are just trying to show off their knowledge. That is rediculous but I have no idea how else someone could conclude from an internet posting that the author is snobby. I certainly don't see many posts like "my car can smoke yours" (with the exception of me and Jeff joking around to try to drum up interest for the National meet).

As for the "elite" part, I am sure that could be remedied by encouraging people who have knowledge and who are willing to share it rather than critisizing them because someone has their feelings hurt when they are given an opinion that is not exactly what they want to hear.

hence why I rarely answer anything anymore...

For me at least... answers come depending on how you asked the question. People who really need to know, or want to know... will ask the proper questions in a proper manner. If you post stuff that pisses me off, chances are I'll chime in and knock heads a bit. I suppose you could call it elite"ist"... but that's really just me... and it's not limited to newbies or anything... I'm sure a lot of the oldies have gone at it with me at one point or another. I personally think some people need this more-so than the mere slap on the wrist... but hell... generally I'm pretty nice. All of the people who have ever PM'ed me directly about something have always gotten detailed responses. When it comes down to it... I really do think being "nice" is a luxury people sometimes take advantage of. If you genuinely need help, ask politely and you'll get your answers sooner or later.

I'll pretty much always float around...

OK,
I posted this letter because I didn't want arguments to start. mad.gif

There are some members who, in the past, have acted if they're better than others. They've conveyed attitudes that are inappropriate and consistently have talked down to others for not knowing much or for having different tastes. Lately though, I haven't seen much of this, and that's a good thing.

So let's leave this alone. No calling people out, no seperating people into groups. Everyone is equal here and that's that. I don't want to hear any more posting about who's elite and who's not.

My apologies. A Statement critisizing people that routinely help out others is like kryptonite to me.

Where would this site be without the Lagos, Presure2s, Defgephs, Dr Tweaks, DG Performances, celica3sgtes, Batman722s, etc., etc., of the world?

This is a moderated website. Management moderates the posts of everyone else and we do what we feel is beneficial to the site. Just because there isn't a clear-cut posted rule about something doesn't mean that we can't do anything.

Like I said, I don't want people calling others out and I don't want to hear any more posting about who's elite and who's not.

You read my post and went directly against it, so I removed it.

Not to bitter, jadded or Cold, but seriously....Go shoot yourself

i am guilty of responding very agressively to that. I was simply f- sick of being disrespected, i never picked a fight with anyone, never !
but i would've fought to the end when war is brought upon me.

the people that this concerns know who they are, no need to point fingers at anyone as this would agrevate the situation. Coomer is asking everyone to please clean up their act and to treat everyone equal. It's very little to ask in return for everything he did for us.

As a junior of this site, i am willing to do my very best to contribute to this.
This includes not saying my oppinion if i know it will piss someone off and appologizing to anyone that i may have offended unwillingly.

It's not hard to be polite

What if someone says "hey what do you guys think of: so and so..."? Personally I like to give a thumbs up maybe or thumbs down because I'm simple and honest, is this going to be a problem?

I think Coomer is refering to pointless gifs or posts. A thumbsup.gif or thumbsdown.gif is fine.

Or you could post something like

Awesome thumbsup.gif

If you dont like something just dont reply to the thread. Thats the best response to something you dont like, just ignore it.

Don't mean to be rude, but this is right up your alley Supersprynt.

I Agree wholly with this entire post! Thanks for letting it all out Croomer.

Tina's 100% correct with this. You say you dont mean to be rude, but clearly YOUR the problem because you take shots like that. I dont. I also disagree with you Jeff. If someone says "what do you think about this?" Is this a forum where public opinion is not welcome? I'm an honest person, I'm also a nice guy - u've met me in person, I have no problem giving a thumbs down or saying no man, I dont like that, but props on your work etc. etc. It certainly doesnt need to be made in a rude manner, however if this place is just going to be happy-happy without any honest opinions, its just going to be a glazed over forum that you cant get any real answers on. Alot of times I certainly will not post on something because I dont like it, in fact I'd say 8/10 times I dont simply because of that reason. Nothing nice to say, then dont say it. But I cant help but be reminded of the movie Equilibrium. Where everyone goes around emotionless.

Maybe some changes do need to be made here, but as a whole this is probably the single most clean, and nicest car forum on the internet even with what all you guys are talking about. But to say NO negative comments is unrealistic.

I dont know if I'm "elite" I am sure alot of ppl have a problem with me simply because I'm direct and honest with them and they want it sugar coated. Somone with LED's in their exhaust and an electric turbo should be flamed here because its going to be done in the real world at least here its just the internet. Random people I have never talked to have IMed me asking me questions, hell alot of them not even from this forum. And I will go look up the answers to questions if I dont know the answer and I will spend time with them to help them out as long as they dont piss me off.

PS: Everyone cannot be appeased. Someone will always be complaining.

Probably a little late for this, I doubt any mods or Coomer will read it, but, I agree about the decline of the site.

However, i'd like to point out something that could be improved upon, to increase the user base and make life a little easier for people..

QUOTE
This site is a resource for the sixth generation Toyota Celica. Lately though, it's felt more like a playground.

The lack of good stickies/archive on this site is frustrating to say the least. If people were given something that was well written, there would be no excuse for someone not to understand it. In it's current state, it seems like certain areas of the forums are less of a resource, and more of a collection of random post-it notes with good bits of information here & there.

A good example is this thread in the sticky area of the engine/trans forum. Now, I'm not one to nitpick, but honestly - a transmission thread is extremely important, and that thread only relates to one setup. It ends with more questions, is somewhat disorganized, and has a few theories instead of facts. People ask about transmissions all the time , it's a vital component in any swap, but the information isn't easily accessible. This leads to frustration & sometimes flames, when the older members need to answer the same question 8 times a day (which shifter cables to use, which axles, which trans, etc.).

I think some of the frustration can be alleviated if the mods, or someone, would get better at archiving & organizing relevant information, and write it a little better so people would get their questions answered. I would be more than happy to go over some of the threads and possibly make a list for things that need to be archived, or collated, in to one large thread so people have an actual resource to check. This way, the forums won't be full of clutter with the same topic over & over again, leaving room for actual discussion instead of questions. Yes, this is critcism, but not to be construed in any negative way, I like this site, and the people on it.

Otherwise, the site layout, the features, are wonderful. Coomer & everyone have taken a lot of time out of their life to work this site, and I think it's time for the community to give something back, put all the eggs in one basket, and really start to organize the information which is vital for people ready to dump 1000's of dollars in to their car.

Thanks for your time.

yupp, I thought when I first got my celica, I was like damn I could've gotten something else. But when I joined in, I learned many things about the celica like exterior, engine, mods, etc. If I never came here, I probably never would have appreciated my celica than I would have now. Now, I could not even bear the thought of letting it go. One day it would be nice to see my celica parked next to its bigger brother the supra, once I have money for that.
