so i have the major parts for the auto to manual swap but now i need help biggrin.gif
i would love to do it myself and everything...i just dont have the experience, or man power for that matter

ive gotten the ever popular "its not worth it, just buy a new car" which i choose to ignore, the "well i could do it for $2,000" which is way over my budget, and the wannabe mechanic doing work out of his garage who says "id love to try, can i give you an estimate" then never answers the phone again

id trust a 6gc-er over anyone else anyway so i figured id at least ask before looking elsewhere any more
i will pay, just let me know what you think is fair and i'll tell you if i can pay it

please help biggrin.gif
thanks

I think it would be great if we could find access to a lift. In that case we could get a few of us guys on this thing, and get it done a little easier....i know I'd be down.

The more research prior to the operation, the smoother it'll go though.

i still have to find a garage to use...

i have a 2 car garage but it only fits one car and you have to park all slanted otherwise you cant open the car door...and i dont even know what any of it is, if it was up to me id just push it all down the driveway and leave it for the garbage people
my dad parks in there, i park in the yard b/c im too lazy to clean it...

i actually wasnt even going to tell the family...i figured my dad would just realize it when he went to move my car for some reason and sees a 5spd lol my family asks too many questions so i like to just avoid them whenever possible haha biggrin.gif

but i guess, if it must come to that, i'll tell them and clean it out...boo kindasad.gif

has anyone responded yet that actually can help, and knows what they are doing? heh.

i swapped my car to a 5speed a while back, and have had to take the tranny off a couple times since. (clutch, mount goes bad, etc). too bad i'm all the way in TN. frown.gif. I'm always down to pull a tranny...

if you know what your doing, you can have it done in well less than a day of work.

so im getting some more stuff from a salvage by miguel for 200:
clutch pedal assembly
master cylinder
clutch line
brake pedal

almost there, still need:
engine mount (going to buy new)
shifter (going to buy TRD)
and shift boot (not worried about that one)

if im missing anything else please let me know

heres what i already have for reference:
Manual tranny
Manual ECU
Flywheel
Clutch
the 6 bolts
Shifter cables
Clutch slave cylinder (attached to the tranny)
Clutch line (however much of it was attached to the tranny, getting the one from the salvage just to be sure)

You might need Manual axles. With the 7afe I'm not sure if they are the same or not. If you car has ABS, you'll need ABS axles to have it work properly

You might need Manual axles. With the 7afe I'm not sure if they are the same or not. If you car has ABS, you'll need ABS axles to have it work properly

i do not have ABS...sadly
but if anyone knows about the axle situation PLEASE let me know asap. thanks!

well when I bought my 5sfe 94 gt it was already switch to manual. it was an atx from the start. so I was relief. but the shifter housing is not original. I plan on looking at Toyota for the trd one. wish I could come down but its sorta far. goodluck!

so mac says i should get all new mounts instead of just the one thats needed. theres like 4 i believe. is this really necessary? i didnt want to spend that much if it wasnt necessary but if a few people think its a good idea then i will. and if i dont have to buy all the mounts i'll have enough for the trd shifter

just mount(s) and shifter left woot.gif
[i'll address the axle situation when someone knows for sure but for now im assuming it isnt necessary]

make sure you have the pressure plate resurfaced at a machine shop, and you will need a new clutch.

i'd just have the flywheel resurfaced.
if you cant find someone local to do it, just bring it up with you, and i can have it done up here for like ~30$

so this ended up costing me wayy too much money in the end but hopefully it will all be worth it, heres the final cost breakdown:

Manual transmission
Manual ECU
Flywheel/ Clutch/ bolts
Shifter cables
Clutch slave cylinder (attached to tranny)
Clutch lines (attached to tranny)
$400

Clutch pedal assembly
Clutch master cylinder
Brake pedal
$200

All 4 motor mounts
Resurface flywheel
New clutch
$140

TRD shifter assembly
$187.25

coming out to a grand total of rolleyes.gif $927.25
had i went with the stock shifter it would have only come out to about 800 but hopefully it will be well worth the extra cash...hopefully smile.gif

got it all. ready to go. ive been waiting a long time to get this far, hopefully it will be done this weekend ::cross fingers::

...im incredibly excited biggrin.gif

hooooly ****...thats a lot. i did it on a gt with like a 1/3rd of that cost.

it IS WORTH IT though. Trust me;)

One thing. If that's your list, you don't have everything. Sometimes when you buy parts, lots of clips and things are missing, so you have to be sure. I had to get a lot of springs and clips and things like that when I did mine straight from Toyota. It's best to buy a clutch and pressure plate combo. I'm sure Exedy makes an OEM replacement. But I see you've already got a lot of parts. Best of luck.

JDM guy, yo!
haha
a few notes for future refrence.
be sure to get the rubber line that goes between the clutch master hardline, and the slave cylinder hardline. if you have to order it from toyota, they wont have any in-stock, and you'll be lucky if they have one in the country. ( they didnt when we did this.)
if you can get one thats in decent shape from a junkyard, do it.
shifter cable c-clips.
if your not planning major power upgrades, buy an OEM clutch.
you'll pay more, but the fit, feel, and life of the OEM parts makes it worth it.
1 1/4" holesaw for the clutch master, and a 5/16th drill bit i think it was.

U really didn't have to get a new ECU for the Manual. You could just re-wire the auto ecu to fool it and make it work. But its safe to have one just in case.

Dan (Playr158) gave me the ECU with the tranny. Its a 96 ECU with a 94/95 (we assume) tranny on a 97 Celica. Works perfectly - no CEL, starts every time, no problems whatsoever...so far smile.gif

the part numbers on the 96 and 97 ECU's are different. its been said the 96 ECU may put out different codes than the 97 but I have no idea if there is any truth to that statement. but for the one day that I've had it, it works fine. you would never be able to tell it was ever anything but a manual wink.gif

That is probably my tranny if you got it from playr. Its from a 95 st and had about 85k miles on it. If you got the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate from him you could have used it, it was brand new and only had about 2k miles on it. BTW the flywheel is from a corolla 7a.

Alright, I didn't take too many pictures but heres how it went...

I made the three hour drive Fri night with all the parts that weren't already at Manny's moms. Got pulled over in RI for doing over twice the speed limit/ reckless driving (I didnt know the lanes merged), cop was suspicious of the tranny (which was under a tarp in my passenger footwell), ended up getting an $85 ticket for 5 over the limit rolleyes.gif which became the least of my worries

Anyway...

Day 1 (Sat Aug 5)
put the car in the garage
IPB Image
took out the little stuff
IPB Image
planned the attack
IPB Image
put in the pedals
IPB Image
IPB Image
IPB Image
IPB Image

Problem #1: We find out the rubber clutch line thats attached to the master cylinder metal line is cut and is kind of necessary to completing the swap.
IPB Image
IPB Image
Solution: Take the line off Dustin's ST if worse comes to worse. He's been driving the GT lately anyway tongue.gif

then Manny tried to get the rear mount and cross member out and got pissed so when Dustin got back from work and he tried and got it out.

Day 2 (Sun Aug 6)
Me and Dustin stopped at Autozone to pick up some synchromesh and other things on the way to Mannys. Manny has the auto tranny out by the time we got there around 2pm.
IPB Image

The resurfaced flywheel and new clutch go on
IPB Image

Problem #2: Go to put the new throwout bearing onto the fork and find out it doesn't fit. We decide not to use the old throwout bearing because we have no idea how old it is. It was Sun after 5pm and nowhere that was even open was going to have it in stock.
IPB Image
Solution: No other choice but to order it from the Toyota dealer the next morning.

Manny is super pissed. He gets the metal clutch line from the master cylinder in place and is done for the day.

Dustin got the shifter cables and ECU in then put all of the interior back together nicely. Brought some things home to work out some wiring issues, like the reverse lights and neutral start switch.
IPB Image
IPB Image
(^the pink stuff is just grease, it's still there just hidden)

When there's nothing else that can be done, work comes to a stop for the day.

Day 3 (Mon Aug 7)
Didn't even see the car the whole day.
Went to the Toyota Dealer in the AM to order the parts. The throwout bearing was in stock in Boston and would be there next day. The ST rubber clutch line was a different story, there was not a single one at any dealer in the country. Dustin ordered the GT line, of which there is only one and will take a week to get. Got a shifter cable clip as well (should have gotten a few more). Came out to $70

Thats about all that could be done for the day.

Day 4 (Tue Aug 8)
Dustin and Jenn had to work. I took Dustin's ST and picked up the parts from the dealer then picked up Manny and went to my car.
IPB Image
Messed around preping the tranny for a while cause Manny was going to wait and have someone help him lift the tranny into place. F- that plan, I guess Manny got bored, bench pressed the tranny in place by himself cause Manny is the freakin MAN biggrin.gif lol

Only thing left was to hook up things and put stuff back together. Jenn got back from work and we left to get food. When we got back Manny had hooked up the essential things and tried to start the car but it wouldn't even turn over and the check engine light was on. Called up Dustin to make sure of the next step. Wired the two black wires together (from the harness in the engine bay) and the car started right up with no problem. Wired in Dustin's makeshift reverse light switch. Stole the rubber clutch line out of Dustin's ST, made sure everything worked then tightened everything up and put it all back together.

I drove it down the driveway and there were some noises. Manny took it for a drive to make sure the clutch was alright, said it drove nice and seemed fine otherwise.
Brought it back to the house, I duct taped the shift boot to the shifter surround trim since the auto trim doesn't have the clips to hold it in place
IPB Image

So I made the 3-4 hour drive back home and hit a bit of traffic but still think I did pretty well if I do say so myself wink.gif
As of today it doesn't make any weird noises anymore and I think I'm getting better at driving it as well as enjoying driving more and more woot.gif

thanks JDM guy thumbsup.gif ... too bad Jeff couldn't make it, Jenn and Joey had to take his place as the J laugh.gif ... you guys are the best!

I'm guessing the difference in ecu p#s is just an updated ecu.

I'm just wondering if it will affect anything when I have to get the car inspected. Will it give them different info? Will it tell them its a 96 while my registration says 97, maybe they'd have a problem with that? Should I get Jeff's 97 ECU just to be sure or do you think I'll be perfectly fine? So far it's been starting/running fine... no problems, no check engine light.

if they bring anything up to you, just tell them you put a new ECU in because yours crapped out wink.gif

I'm not telling. Hopefully the ECU doesnt say anything either and we shouldn't have a problem wink.gif I don't know what info comes up when they plug in the OBDII

I've just always been nervous when I get my car inspected since they failed me the first time for something as stupid as a hole in the headlight. rolleyes.gif

I'm not worried about the way it runs. I love my franken-car the way it is biggrin.gif

Grats on the swap. All those pics...reminds me of when I did my manual conversion... what a PITA. The big hole for the master cylinder.... how did you manage to get such a clean hole? I had to drill a bunch of holes and then hammer it out.

Great job. I did the same project. I love it. I'v got just GT shifter cabels, but they work just fine. Big difference between auto and stick. So much fun, faster and ju can do burn out if you want...( I don't do that)
Do you guys know what is a diff in pouds between auto tranny and 5 speed. I think it's pretty big.

yea, the auto tranny is alot heavier compared to the manual.
john, it only took 4 days because of missing and wrong parts.
in reality, i could have done the swap in a full days work. wink.gif
we broke off early on saturday cause i had already worked in the AM, so we worked a couple hrs, and called it a day so i could eat.
sunday, there really wasnt much to do other than install the clutch line, once we knew the TOB wasnt right.
monday was a dead day, we didnt touch the car.
once we got the parts on tuesday late morning, the car was back up and running in a matter of a couple hrs.
so, total time was prolly 6-8 hrs..by far no records were broken, but that wasnt the goal.
enjoying the car steff?

oh i realize there wasn't a speed record in pursuit. just seems like a terribly long time. i completely understand though, as 10min jobs have turned into day long jobs for me too. don't think i meant it like that. and the money, just don't spend 1k on the rear disc conversion steff. tongue.gif.

Dont' worry too much about it.
There are basically 2 reasons for the different part #.
Either Toyota decided after production to change some of the programming inside, and the 97 is one of these newer ones, or Toyota decided during production [for the 97 model] to change it.

I will TRY to remember [and get a chance] to check for any TSBs on it at work tomorrow.

A day late.
Sorry.

But anyways, there are no TSBs on it.
The only other thing I can do right now is check the p#s and see if the 96 one is revised in later models.
If you still car, get me the p#.

Or not. biggrin.gif

in the end it cost about $1k. I bought parts here and there so it didnt seem like that much money. it was well worth it to me cause I really like my car and intend to keep it for as long as possible.

...it's so much more fun to drive and the gas mileage is soooo much better thumbsup.gif
