what exactly are you looking for? specifics on the internal workings? general observations?
![]() in my limited experience... the auto tranny makes for a slower car and lags around 90-100mph, its a good deal bigger/heavier, takes more power from the electrical system, is connected to the radiator to cool it, has a dipstick to check tranny fluid level, uses only one shifter cable, has a torque converter with the manual tranny the lag at higher speeds is non-existent, it accelerates steadily until its limit. lighter and there are a good deal of wires that the auto needs which are un-necessary for the manual tranny. checking the tranny fluid seems a little harder and more subjective. but its much more fun ![]() This post has been edited by hurley97: Oct 23, 2006 - 11:06 PM -------------------- |

The key difference between a manual and an automatic transmission is that the manual transmission locks and unlocks different sets of gears to the output shaft to achieve the various gear ratios, while in an automatic transmission, the same set of gears produces all of the different gear ratios. The planetary gearset is the device that makes this possible in an automatic transmission.

QUOTE(Toyoca @ Oct 24, 2006 - 1:23 AM) is there any way to make an automatic transmission just as "good" as a manual one? efficient speedy I would say not without having to take it apart and mess with things (if at all). in that sense I kind of wish I could have kept my old auto tranny and taken it apart just to see. but IMO a tranny swap is much easier. ![]() -------------------- |

In essence no, the computer will always be faster than a human driver. BUT, the gearing is the issue. the 7 speed auto E55amgs compete with manual 5 speed vipers, obviouslly theres a power gap along with a computer controlled supercharger BUT, transferring power.
Short answer no, long answer yes but not worth it (not even close in a celica haha) |

there are 4 types of transmission in production today:
1) automatic : the usual transmission you see in everyday automatic cars. This is the one everyone complains about effiency and how boring they are to drive. How slow they are. ect.... 2) automatic sport shift: this is an automatic transimission that lets you controll it. you will see these in bmw's and lexis. pretty popular these days. They are just an automatic transmission that lets you control how it shifts. nothing special here. 3) automatic manual transmission: you can see these in fancy sports cars like ferriries and aston martins. the more common production model is the audi DSG transmission. ( http://cars.about.com/od/thingsyouneedtokn...owDSGworks.htm) if you want to read more about it. This is the most effiect automatic transmission you can get in production cars today. slightly more fun to drive... i guess? 4) manual transmission: this is the manual transmission with the clutch and gear selecter... the whole 9 yards. every gear is directly selected by the driver. supposely the most fun to drive. as to make your automatic transmission more effiecent. well you can buy upgrade parts and what-not such as high stall torque converters. but that is as good as it gets for "upgrading". But in new production cars, the automatic transmission has the ablitly to directly lock up and give you just as good effiency on the high way as a manual. let me know if you have any more questions.
