2 days, one celica, 6 6gc members = MANUAL TRANSMISSION.

First of all let me say JDM GUY Owns.
Manny, Jenn, Dustin and Steff are amazing. I can't thank them enough for their help and the use of the garage and house for two days.

thats amazing work... I'm bit envious you can meet like this and have some "fun" like this biggrin.gif.

note: Tina, let me know how do you feel with manual tranny biggrin.gif. Especially take-off part of drive wink.gif. I remember how it was when I was learning to drive biggrin.gif

note (for all):
here are about 90% of cars with manual tranny wink.gif. I have driven auto tranny car just once in my life biggrin.gif.

^ Thanks Joe

Update:

I haven't really be able to enjoy this swap because my car has been leaking gear oil.

I called Manny up and he told me what to look for and that maybe the tranny was overfilled and caused a leak.
That wasn't the problem.

To save myself the aggrivation of trying to get my car high enough in my garage I brought my car over to Mavis where my cousin works. We put the car on the lift and saw that the leak was coming from the axle seal on the driver's side. Which would not have been a big deal if it was only a bad seal. We then put the car in gear and let the wheels roll. That's when the real problem showed up. My axle instead of staying straight and turning in the tranny was going up and down.

The leak was happening because the axle was/or looks to be too small for the tranny leaving a gap where it should be sealed. I could literally pull the axle out of the tranny.

So if you are doing an auto to manual swap i suggest getting manual axles.

I should have gotten them but I was told I didn't need them.

Maybe I'm wrong about a size difference. So my question is for those of you who have done this did you get manual axles?

tina, just FYI, the axles are the same for the ST, auto and manual. ( i just checked the EPC)
chances are, the snap ring on the axle was worn, which is highly likely, seeing as how they were used axles.

I'm just glad I caught it before it was a serious problem.

Yep, no difference in axles. You just swap out the splines if I remember correctly. I know I swapped something on them because I did not order the axles from the yard with my trans.

ok another update: the snap ring is fine.

the passenger's side is in very tight as of right now both axles are out of the car when they fit passenger's side to the drivers side it moves around the same way. So they think it's something internally wrong with the transmission.

are the axles you had in there OEM, or have they ever been replaced?

try to measure the diameter of the input shafts and compare them. sometimes, they machine those shafts down when they rebuild them, and that could be causing your problem (if you're on rebuilt axles). also, make sure new axle seals were installed correctly. my drivers side axle has a fair bit of play in it too, but its never leaked any oil.

thats exactly what we were afraid of. find out as much as you can about that tranny.

I know for sure the auto axles are fine (aside from being the same part in the EPC) I've had my 97 auto axles in my 95 transmission for over a year now with no problems. If I wasn't 100% sure I would have told you to get them anyway.

we put new seals in it. I think you might have a bad tranny or something internaly not right. The axles are fine, that isn't the problem.

Dan, just a question, you had your 7a w/tranny (just over 100K on it right ?), and you bought another tranny with a few less miles than your had (85K), Why did you buy a new tranny ? Did you think you had a problem with your stock tranny ? Why would you buy another ? You wanted to swap anyway and not use any 7a stuff, so why another tranny ?

I hate so sound like a jerk or point fingers but if I bought a 2nd tranny it would be for a reason...because the one I had was bad or going bad...

just a small update since i just got back from vacation.

1. I am really angry. I now have to find a tranny shop to take my car to and in all honesty i don't have the $ for it right now. So my car will most likely be towed to my house and it will rot in my garage until i can do something about this.

The axles are fine. Both of them, and they are both OEM. There is something internally wrong with the transmission. From what I was told I'm either going to have to get a new transmission or the one in the car now has to be rebuilt.

I'm just really upset which i think is understandable since I can't drive my ****ing car.

I'm just really upset which i think is understandable since I can't drive my ****ing car.

shame you got a bad tranny tina...i had a bad feeling when you told me it had been sand blasted..
if you can source a GOOD tranny, im sure we could work somthing out to get it in, even if it means a road trip.

man that completely sucks.

When i had it the only problem was a bad oil seal frown.gif

we put new seals in it.

I hate so sound like a jerk or point fingers but if I bought a 2nd tranny it would be for a reason...because the one I had was bad or going bad...

rolleyes.gif wow talk about assumptions and false information....

a) the tranny had ~102k if i recall correctly (i haven't seen my gauge cluster in awhile)
b) I NEVER bought another transmission.
c) Tranny was working when I took it off the car. I drove the car into the garage and then removed everything.
d) I got a second motor + tranny combo for a 7afte build (after i already tore apart my car), then decided against that plan, leaving me with 2 MT 7afe setups.

you should really get your facts straight before making up stories....maybe yall ****ed it up with JDM YO installz rolleyes.gif

dan, since IM the one who installed the tranny, a few notes.
i cant see how you can really screw up the tranny itself installing it. only thing i can see is bending the input shaft, or gouging the seal seats (one of which was a bit scratched up when the tranny arrived here) which clearly is not the problem here.
dont talk about making up stories, then go ahead and make one up yourself.
dustins words are his own, so i wont speak for him, but if your gonna talk about something that I installed, dont quote him, and talk to me.
in case you havent noticed already, i never blamed you in my posts, and still wont.
i never liked the idea of the tranny being snadblasted, but that dont mean, (and i dont think, BTW) thats what caused her problem.
could just be a case of bad luck for all i know, and to be honest, i dont really care WHY its broke. cause at this point that really dont matter.
i just wanna see it fixed, one way, or the other.

tina, have you asked jeff what he did with his tranny from his swap? i cant remember off the top of my head if he still has it or not, im thinking no, but you never know.

he sold the other tranny to Steff over a year ago for her swap.

Dan, I call em as I see em. You have always said it had bad seals, maybe it wasn't bad seals after all...

so you picked up Rob's old 7a motor and tranny ?

I never said you were blaming me and I totally respect your point. I don't know how the tranny could get messed up either...but I know it can happen. When it was sandblasted the openings were covered carefully to insure no sand got in. I was doing Tina a favor cause my tranny was dirty frown.gif
But I totally agree that it just needs to be fixed.

and Dustin..It was looked at by a certified tech when i had the clutch installed (only a few hundred before it was pulled). So i'll stick with his diagnostics over yours...

Dan i'm not blaming you or anyone who helped put it in.

I'm sure everyone can understand why I'm upset about all this.

As of right now I'm doing nothing about this. my car is still in the parking lot of mavis where it will prob stay until i can figure out if it's safe to drive 30 min home or if i should have it towed.

After spending some time sitting in my empty garage really really thinking about this, i'd like to TRY and find a tranny for my car because as silly as it sounds i really miss it. I'm lucky enough to have the jeep to drive but I'd really rather not drive it everyday esp. with the gas prices so high.

so- I need to figure out wtf is wrong. or just get a new transmission. what do you guys think?

Update: My cousin is bringing my car over to a transmission shop where he knows someone. So by Friday I should know what's wrong.

I just called you, no answer....

the junkyard by my job [the one that has the 7th gen wheels] probably has some good low mileage trannys. I wanted to talk to you about how much you were willing to spend on it, I have the day off tomorrow and I'll go over and see how much he wants for one. I can bring it down whenever we help put it in.

call me

Hey steff I know I was on the phone when you called I'm sorry.

I don't want to get anything yet. The car is going to a guy who specializes in transmission repair. So once i find out exactly what's wrong I'll know if it's worth fixing or getting a new one. I don't want to make everyone go all crazy looking for something I may not need.

I got your message I couldn't answer at work.

In all honesty I have no idea what's going on. Right now I am borrowing cars from my parents because i have NO idea when I will get my car back and my Jeep broke down again. I haven't heard from my cousin so I don't even know what the status of my car is. There really isn't anything I can do right now because the car is already at the tranny shop I'd have to go there and attempt to drive my car home 30 min with the axle moving up and down. So all there is to do right now is wait. Believe me I've done my fair share of crying and stressing over this. I prob will get my car back just in time to put it away for the winter. Or not depending on what's wrong with the Jeep.

The other problem is I'm not about to make everyone come up here to do work on my car again. My garage is tiny and I don't have the tools for this. I also don't want to get another tranny if the one I have can be fixed.

you made it the 3-4 hours home from here. I'm sure if you give it some more tranny fluid it'll make it home... or to Erik's house

a straight tranny replacement is easy, Manny and Jeff have taken the trip to do it for Shannon and me and Dustin have made a trip for Jesse, there's no reason why it would be any inconvenience to do it for you

Update 9/5/07 My cousin just called. The transmission shop said that they can fix the transmission. They said the transmission's bearings are shot. It needs to be rebuilt and it will be $1,000.00. Right now I can't afford this so I don't know what to do. My parents flipped and will not let me put another used transmission in my car. As of right now i am arranging to have my car towed back to my house. I don't know what I'm going to do. I am so unhappy right now i can't even explain it. I absolutely at this point regret swapping, if i didn't swap I'd still have my car. The only thing I can think of is starting to sell things like the sides and spillters. I really don't want to do that. I don't know i'm just so upset and emotional over this it's ridiculous

Dustin- Steff already told me about the junk yard and how much. That's not the problem. My parent's are not allowing me to put another used transmission in the car. They said to tow it and let it sit until i can afford to fix it. I have money put away but it's for my sister's bridal shower i have to pay for which will end up being over $1,000.00.

My car is in my parent's name because I'm 22 and my insurance would be very expensive. So legally it is their car and they are letting me know that right now.

It's a lot of **** i'm dealing with right now also considering my other car is in a shop and i'm waiting to see how much that's going to cost.

Update 2:

I called my cousin and told him I could not afford to do the rebuild. He said that he will go tomorrow to pick up my car.

I won't be able to pick my car up tomorrow but most likely friday night. I'll have my b/f follow me home to make sure nothing happens. I'm not too thrilled with the idea of driving my car on the highway like this but there isn't anything I can do about that.

I still have to get a price on towing.

I would have to argue against the whole rebuild being more reliable than a used transmission.

The car's owner is whoever is on the Title, not insurance.

Everyone whose modified their cars have regretted it at some point when things go wrong. I regretted doing the E153 for a long time before I got the right axles and shifter cables. It's still not perfect but I don't regret it anymore.

My Mother is on the title and the insurance. So I legally don't own the car. Obviously the car is mine but again the fact that I am not on the title is dangling over my head.

Dan is right.

The other thing is my car stays in the garage for the winter usually Nov/Dec till March/April So I could just suck it up and put the car away put the money away and in April get the trans. rebuilt.

This all depends on what the status of the Jeep is. I hope to get that car back by friday but i doubt it.

OR

you will see a major for sale/trade thread with my projectors and body parts for the car.

Yeah I know what you meant I just thought the title switched awhile back.

If it's your car then it should be in your name; your going to have to do this eventually. This is probably one of the only pieces of control they have left and won't let it go lightly.

Additionally: http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=51808

Its for a 4age but I'm sure it'll work...I'd take the trip with you if you needed.

i know they quoted you 1000 for them to do it. does anyone on the site in her general area know how to do it? that would cut her costs way down. it's sad to see this happen to you tina. def don't part her out. if worse comes to worse why not just put the auto back in? your car is beautiful and we don't want to see her get thrown to the wolves wanting cheap parts.
(don't get me wrong. i like cheap parts but not like this)

everything will be fine. there is an easy solution to this and she knows that, its just a matter of working things out so its convenient for everyone. if she lets us we will be happy to help and get this done as soon as possible.

the auto is not going back in, that was/is not an option at this point.

Tina i will not let you sell the mods off your car. Thats final. I will give you some money for the tranny issues before i let you remove those things. I will start the "STMHHFHTPF" (Save Tina's Mod's and Help Her Fix Her Tranny Problems Foundation) and we will get this squared away!

You guys really are awesome.

After a long talk about this there are now three solutions.

1. I will paypal or otherwise send to Steff 200 for the 60K tranny. Whatever weekend they are free i'll move some stuff around in the garage and we'll spend how ever long it takes to get the tranny in my car.

2. I will paypal etc. Steff 200 for the 60K tranny, and the tranny shop that has my car now will install it for a lot less then it would cost to take it apart and put it back in. I am currently waiting on a phone call from this shop to see how much it costs.

3.is my car hangs in the garage for the winter and this gets done in the spring and I suck up not being able to use it for the next 2 months of nice weather.

I am not paying 1,000 to have a 100K tranny rebuilt. I'm not a fan of rebuilt things they make me nervous.

And don't worry I'm not parting her out.

so there will be an update soon and a phone call to Steff.

I have the answer to your problems...

its from a 94 Corolla and has only 47,000 miles on it. we will have to change the mount brackets over from the one thats in your car right now, other than that we compared everything to the tranny in my car before I paid the guy for it. he said he guarantees it will shift nice and work perfectly.

the inside is beatifully clean, the fork on my tranny isn't even close to as clean as this one

So do I need to buy anything? seals or can we use the ones of the busted tranny? Also do the motor mounts fit?

I know I'll need more syncromesh that's fine i can get that.

Went tonight and picked the car up. Obviously it didn't drive well but I got her home. I have to say i've never seen my car look so dirty ever. frown.gif

I'm happy to have her back and I'll be happier once i can drive her again.

I also got good news that the jeep will be done either this weekend or monday... apparently there was "****" in my gas tank. I don't really believe that at all but nevertheless the car is coming back.
